MEDICATION POLICY

Please read carefully, as your child and you will be expected to abide by its provisions, when medication for your child is required during the school day. The Parental Authorization Form necessary for compliance with the policy is in the school nurse's office or at the link below. If your child does not currently need medication at school, you are encouraged to remember this policy for future reference.

• ALL medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, must be brought to the school nurse's office by the parent or guardian.
• ALL medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, to be given at school require a Parental Authorization Form to be completed by the parent and/or guardian. Prescription medicines will require forms to be completed both by the physician and parent/guardian. Any change in medication will require a new form to be completed.
• NO over-the-counter medications will be maintained or provided by school personnel. Non-prescription medicines will be given only to those students whose parents/guardians provide the medication AND the appropriated Patental Authorization Form(s).
• ALL medications must be provided in original containers with (in the case of prescription medication) completed pharmacy labels and/or (in the case of over-the-counter) manufacturer's labels and an additional label with a child's name and dosage/time instructions. No medication samples will be accepted at school.
• ALL medications will be kept in a central, secure location and given only by designated personnel that received training by the school nurse, except where arrangements are expressly authorized under the policy for :Self-Administration of Medication."
• Medications stored in envelopes, ziplock bags, etc. will not be administered.
• No verbal orders for medications (prescription and over-the-counter) will be accepted over the phone from anyone except from the child's physician.
• Parents should check with their child's physician regarding the need for medications to be given during school hours. For example, medications prescribed for three times daily often can be given before school, after school, and at bedtime.
• Students may not have medication in their possession, except with a physician's written request or a physician's order on an asthma plan. Students who violate these rules will be in violation of the Alcohol/Illegal Drug Use Policy.

Head Lice

Many people associate lice with uncleanness or poor personal hygiene, but this is not true in the case of head lice. Although these insects cannot hop, jump, or fly, they are transmitted in school via head to head contact or the sharing of hats, combs, brushes, barrettes, etc. of an infested child. Please help us prevent head lice at Centre Elementary School by examining your child's head on a regular basis.

Lice are insects approximately 1/8" long and grayish black in color. They are often difficult to see. They lay eggs (nits) on the hair shaft. The nits look like tiny white flecks which cling to the hair (unlike dandruff) and can cause intense itching. Lice survive by biting the scalp causing red marks on the back of the neck or scalp.

A lice infestation should not be a source of embarrassment to either parent or child since lice can infest anyone. The important thing is to treat your child promptly and correctly.

Follow these rules if you suspect your child has this condition:

• Purchase a high quality lice-killing shampoo at your local retailer. No prescription is needed; however, for persistent cases a prescription shampoo from your M.D. is recommended.
• Shampoo your child's head following label directions on the package. Keep shampoo out of the child's eyes.
• After shampooing, comb child's hair with a fine-tooth comb (usually in package) to remove all nits. Metal combs work better purchased at pharmacies. The National Pediculosis Association has long loothed metal combs for purchase online or by calling 1-888-542-3634.
• Inspect child's hair for nits daily for one week and regularly thereafter. Repeat shampoo treatment according to package directions.
• Wash in hot water or dry clean your child's recently worn clothing and bedding. Vacuum furniture and carpets.
• Instruct child not to wear playmates' clothes, hats or other garments or to use someone else's comb or hairbrush.
• All children returning to school after being treated for head lice must be checked in the office and shown to be nit free before returning to class.
• As a matter of courtesy, please inform the parents of your child's friends so that they can check the heads of their children.
