Centre Middle School was organized in 1960 for the purpose of relieving overcrowded student population at the local elementary and high school. It is one of four schools in the city of Centre. The school began operation with 260 pupils and a total of nine faculty members, including the principal. These were housed in an old high school plant constructed in 1938 of brick veneer which consisted of fourteen classrooms and an auditorium-gymnasium.

A new middle school is being constructed and will be ready to open for the 2009-2010 school year. The new middle school will house the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
