Section 6: Web Adventures

The Internet can be used as a source for adventures. There are many such adventures already available; however you could create your own webquests if you can't find what you need.

If you wish to create any of the following types of adventures, you can include any information that is appropriate for the topic and age-level of your students. Follow these tips:

  • First, search the Internet for suitable sites.
  • Create a document in a word processor, desktop publisher, or web page software. Make sure all links are "active." Insert pictures and format the font to make the document look pleasant.
  • Save as a web page to be used online or offline. If using online, ask your school webmaster about uploading it to the server and linking to your school's homepage. If using offline, make sure the file is on each computer students will be using or place it on the school server.
  • Check links at least once per year. Web sites are not always available so the links become inactive and sites sometimes move causing broken links.

WebQuests

An inquiry-oriented activity in which some or all of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the Internet.

Internet Field Trips - Virtual Field Trips

A class field trip can enhance student's learning, spark student interest, and adds an element of adventure and fun. However, sometimes time, distance, and expense can set limitations on classroom travel. Virtual field trips take students to places and locations they could never get to easily.  For some this may be the start of real life adventures they take later in life; for others, it might be the only time in their life they get to explore their world right from their classroom.

Internet Scavenger Hunts

Scavenger hunts are fun for students. When used for instruction, a scavenger hunt focuses on a particular theme that is being taught in the classroom.
